Job: On-site program manager for summer research interns
Dates: July 7-August 1, 2025, weekdays.
Time: 9 am – 4:30 pm
Salary: negotiable, typically exceeds the hourly amount from the school year
Location: Portland State University campus
The Institute for Computing in Research is seeking an educator to work with a cohort of students (just finishing 10th, 11th, 12th grade) who will be working full time on academic research projects.
The program manager should have charisma with students and easily spot problems. If energy is dropping, they will address it. They will also coordinate some activities like guest lectures, on-site lunches, building entry/exit, and make sure that the students collaborate with and support each other.
In past years problems have seldom come up, and students simply work full-time under guidance from their research mentor. The light workload leaves many hours in which we expect the program manager to (a) become knowledgeable about free/open-source software, (b) promote visibility of the Institute in the community, (c) think of ways to improve what we do for the next year.
The program manager should have an interest in how to prepare students for research. They do not need to have expertise in computing, though they will learn some skills on the job.
The program manager will be paid a stipend as an independent contractor, and is expected to have benefits from their regular position: this position will not come with benefits.
Our Santa Fe program manager (and overall director of the Institute), Rhonda Crespo, as well as co-founder research scientist Mark Galassi will be available to discuss how the program works.
